The Colegio Unamuno was founded in an emblematic place; the historic district of Salamanca. Surrounded with important monuments, art, beauty, and history, the Colegio opened in 1987 and became a primary entity of Spanish language education in Salamanca.
By 1990, student groups had grown so much that it became necessary to contract several university residences to lodge the students. In addition, a housing program was created, which continues to place students with Spanish families who offer both quality lodgings and exceptional hospitality.
In 1997, the Colegio Unamuno received 97 out of 100 possible points in accreditation by the University of Alcala, Madrid. This rating made the Colegio Unamuno the first College of Salamanca to meet the requirements to achieve CEELE certification (Quality in the Education of Spanish as Foreign Language).
In 1999 the Colegio Unamuno published its first Spanish language education guide, designed specifically for foreigners. ‘Vive el Español’ (‘Spanish Lives’) was published through the Colegio’s publishing house, EDI Rua. The services offered by the Colegio Unamuno continued to expand, as transfers to regional airports, organized excursions, cultural activities, and conference series given by the best specialists in Spanish Civilization and Culture were introduced.
In the year 2000, the Colegio Unamuno moved to its current location, a 19th century building that was completely remodelled and equipped with the latest technologies, including:
- 40 PCs connected permanently to broadband Internet equipped for video conference and free use.
- Library with more than 2000 references and a lending program for students.
- Multimedia classroom with connection via satellite to news sources such as CNN and BBC etc.etc.
- Interactive blackboards.
- 12 classrooms, all of them equipped with video and audio.
- Terrace.
- Spanish court.
- Handicapped access.
In 2001, the Colegio Unamuno got permission from the Committee of Castile and León to offer training courses for the Plan FIP.
In 2008 we obtained a favorable report from the Cervantes Institute, allowing the Colegio Unamuno to join the NETWORK OF ACCREDITED LANGUAGE CENTERS in Spain.
